We need £3,500 to commission a string quartet from composer Matthew Taylor; world première performance by the Carducci Quartet on 11 June.

Matthew Taylor's 8th String Quartet, Celebrations and Salutations, will be the centre of the final concert in this year's Hertfordshire Festival of Music, given by the acclaimed Carducci Quartet.

The Festival has already raised £20,000 in order to bring celebrated musicians to Hertford this June, including our Artist-in-Residence Dame Emma Kirkby.

The commission for Matthew Taylor is the final piece in the jigsaw - which you can help to complete!

Matthew is our very first Featured Composer, and was chosen because of his deep affinity with the music of Haydn. You can visit Matthew's website to find out more about him and his music here.

Watch the world première performance of his Flute Concerto in 2013:

Haydn's association with Hertfordshire is not well-known, but he actually spent a significant period of time in the county in 1791, as part of his first visit to England. The house in which he stayed is the only building still in existence in the UK in which the famous composer lived.

Matthew's new quartet is in six short movements, and is framed in the performance by the music of Haydn, Beethoven (who became Haydn's student just a year later, in 1792) and Arvo Pärt.

Matthew writes: "Unlike my earlier Quartets, No.8 is more like a suite of movements, suggesting a parallel with Beethoven. The general character of my No.8 is amiable and relaxed. There are even a few Haydnesque jokes in the Finale which seem appropriate for this occasion though I'd be spoiling the fun if I revealed any more! To have this music performed by perhaps the finest string quartet in the UK would be a huge thrill for me."
